Memorial Day

Old Glory

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean today (May 23) issued the following statement in commemoration of Memorial Day:

"This weekend we honor the brave men and women who have defended our country and those who have lost their lives on the battlefield. They deserve the very best in return, which is why the Democratic Congress passed the bi-partisan 21st Century GI bill to help them pay for college when they come home. We believe that if someone is willing to put on the uniform for the United States of America, we should do everything we can to help them and ensure their success when they come home. I'm proud that both of our Democratic candidates for president took time off from the campaign trail to vote in support of this important legislation. The last thing Americans want is another president who will short-change our veterans."

With Friends Like Norm Coleman, Big Oil Profits No Surprise

As Minnesotans Face Record Prices at the Pump, Oil Companies Post Billions in Profits

St. Paul, MN (May 2, 2008) Oil company giants Exxon Mobil and Chevron this week released their revenue numbers, with profits of $10.9 and $5.17 billion, respectively. As Minnesotans continue to pay record prices at the pump, oil companies are raking in extraordinary profits at their expense. In response, the Minnesota DFL Party released the following statement:

“It comes as no surprise that, with powerful friends in Washington like Norm Coleman, big oil companies continue to see record profits,” said DFL Associate Chair Donna Cassutt. “Since going to Washington, Norm Coleman has been a great ally in helping the bottom line of big oil companies, while at the same time ignoring the needs of everyday Minnesotans.”

“As Minnesotans feel their budgets squeezed by record prices at the pump, it’s more clear now than ever that we need to elect a new senator who will put Minnesotans first and lead the way to ensuring our nation’s energy independence,” continued Cassutt.

With Friends Like Norm Coleman, Big Oil Profits No Surprise:

Coleman Has Taken More Than $200,000 from Big Oil. In his Senate races alone, Coleman has accepted $206,100 in campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry. [Center for Responsive Politics, accessed 4/18/08]

And Coleman Voted to Protect Tax Breaks for Big Oil:

Coleman Voted for $5.1 Billion in Special Tax Breaks for Big Oil. In May 2006, Coleman voted for the GOP’s $70 billion tax cut bill.  According to the Boston Globe, “Big oil companies won their push to keep intact accounting changes that stand to net them $5.1 billion.”  [Vote #118, 5/11/06; Boston Globe, 5/12/06]
